Doorway pause

The doorway pause is a short, calm breathing screen DoppiNow shows during a session when you land on a "Distracts me" site or a short-video feed. You can go back to your goal for +10 XP, or continue once the breath is over. It's a speed bump, never a block.

How it works

  1. You reach a distraction

During a session, a “Distracts me” site or a short-video feed shows “A pause before …”.

  2. Breathe

A breathing circle runs for 3, 5 (default) or 8 seconds. Videos and sounds wait.

  3. Not now: +10 XP

“Not now — back to my goal” takes you back and pays +10 XP, the first 3 times each session.

  4. Or continue

“Continue anyway” unlocks after the breath. That site won’t pause you again for 10 minutes.

All the details
  1. It shows during a running session on a site from your "Distracts me" list, or on a short-video feed while the short-video rule is on. It never shows on browser pages, "Part of my work" sites or pages you marked, during a break, or while you're outside Chrome.

  2. It shows once each time you arrive in a tab. Reloading, swiping through Shorts or going a page deeper on the same site doesn't repeat it, but leaving and coming back does.

  3. The screen says "A pause before <site>" (or "A pause before short videos"). A breathing circle ("Breathe in… …and out") lasts 3, 5 (the default) or 8 seconds, with "You're working on <goal>" below it. Below it are a big "Not now — back to my goal" button (+10 XP) and "Continue anyway", which unlocks after the breath. Videos and sounds on the page wait, and the breath starts over if you switch tabs.

  4. The first 3 times each session, "Not now" pays +10 XP and shows a "Good call!" toast on your goal's page. After that it still takes you back, without XP or a toast. It takes you back to your last related page. A tab opened just for the detour closes, and a tab with its own history steps back. If nothing related was open yet, the tab closes; the screen says "This tab will close."

  5. "Continue anyway" (or Esc, once the breath is over) lets that site be. There's no doorway pause there for 10 minutes. If you hadn't had a reminder yet during this detour, the usual grace period before one starts from that moment.

  6. Keyboard focus stays on the two buttons, and page shortcuts wait. Browser shortcuts with Ctrl, Alt or Cmd still work. With reduced motion, the ripples are hidden.

Why it helps with ADHD

In a 6-week field study with 280 people, the one sec app combined a short wait with an option to back out. Users then closed the target app in 36% of attempts. A follow-up experiment found the option to back out had the strongest effect and the delay also helped, while the message on its own "was not effective" (Grüning, Riedel & Lorenz-Spreen 2023). That study was about phone apps in the general population, not ADHD or browsers.

No study has tested DoppiNow itself. DoppiNow is a productivity tool, not a treatment for ADHD.

Doorway pause: common questions

Is the doorway pause a website blocker?

No. "Continue anyway" always opens after a few seconds, and then that site won't pause you again for 10 minutes.

Why does "Not now" stop paying XP?

It pays +10 XP the first 3 times each session, so it stays a small bonus rather than something to farm.

Which sites get a doorway pause?

Only sites on your "Distracts me" list, and short-video feeds while the short-video rule is on.
